12K + LINE / need "intern" for data entry
« on: February 06, 2010, 05:53:09 pm »
hello all

i'm in the final stages of populating the new 12k website with data. among other tasks, i need to paste in all of the CD reviews from every release. the problem is, the formatting of all of the reviews on the current website is mostly in lower case without proper capitalizations and such. now, as many of you have probably figured out, i almost always type in lowercase... but, i'd like the website to have proper capitalizations.

i'd like to see if anyone here has time, or knows someone, who would take every review in all of these pages:

http://www.12k.com/reviews.html

and just clean up the capitalizations and a few other things. just copy/paste and re-capitalize.

i will pay willing to pay with free CDs, either existing ones or future ones. 15 CDs for whoever wishes to do it. (is that enough? too much?)

please email me: info@12k.com if you're interested in helping out.

thanks!
taylor

ART / a hopeful use for the apple tablet
« on: January 27, 2010, 09:54:11 am »
ok... i've been following these tablet rumors for a long time now... disapointed we likely wont' be seeing an OSX device that will allow us to run kyma or live or max. but rather an oversized iPod touch to watch movies, read magazines, play games, and run iphone apps.

all minorly cool, and i'm sure apple will make us all want one.

but.. i just thought of a potentially cool use of the tablet for art. what if PDFs become as standard to content delivery as MP3s are to music. i mean, they are already, but if apple succeeds in making the tablet to visual content what the iPod is to music... a very user friendly, ubiquitous device.... then i can see artists delivering cool PDF-formated art to the iPad content store.

using me for example... what if you, say, buy my "northern" album, but also get a PDF full of photographs and content to view on your tablet. yes, of course, you can do that today and view the PDF on your PC... *but* the tablet will make the viewing experience much much better. the menu bars will disappear, you wont' have a clock or a launch bar "uglying" up the screen...  it will be fluid, touch-friendly, super slick, and totally seamless and much more immersive.

delivering art this way is NOT new.. but, Apple has the ability to make it a totally different and actual worthwhile experience. there is the potential to have the experience be a lot different than simply opening up a PDF on your computer.... the way you will physically hold the tablet, closer to your face, viewing it more like a book than having it sit on your desk a couple feet away. the ful-screen experience, without desktop clutter, etc.

it could also make that failed attempt at PDF liner notes for the iTunes Music store become a much more usable and actually worthwhile experience.

of course, for this to happen, the tablet will need to become as ubiquitous as the iPod.. which it likely won't in the near future due to the price being 3X as much and the device being larger..

but, the apple tablet as a delivery of visual art, to me, holds some promise and inspiration.

(of course, this is all based on assuming the general rumors of this device are true...)

this page has been around for a while, but it's a great resource for all things synthesis.. and goes into details about the G2 environment.

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / the constant desire for NEW
« on: January 15, 2010, 01:14:48 pm »
some time this morning i found a definition of the new (?) phenomenon of the constant desire for the next best thing.. the latest OS, the next version.... someone had a term for it, that i thought was really great...

was it on this forum? or did i read it somewhere else? anyone know what i'm talking about?

the reason i want to find that term again is that i want to start a new discussion based around this idea...

if it was on this forum, let me know.. i poked around, but couldn't find it.

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / mixing with your eyes closed
« on: January 08, 2010, 09:14:26 pm »
just read this very simple, but incredibly effective practice when mixing a song on a computer. seems so logical... because so much computer music is done VISUALLY and, if you move a fade to adjust volume your eyes will often judge when the fader goes "too much" "too little" or "just right".. instead of your ears making that choice.

here's a link to the original thread (the thread was about Ableton mixing, but this one response is what i'm talking about"

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/mastering-forum/454237-mixing-mastering-ableton.html

and here is the advice (from a gearslutz user chopstickkk):

some advice for mixing (especially if you're working with a computer) is this...

make all adjustments with your eyes closed.

decide if you need to make an adjustment.
grab that virtual fader or virtual knob in ableton with your mouse or trackpad.
close your eyes.
wiggle it around a bit so you don't know where it is.
listen and adjust it solely by ear.
listen.
repeat as necessary!

ART / machinefabriek: take a closer listen
« on: January 03, 2010, 02:17:20 pm »
did anyone order Rutger's little book, "take a closer listen"? i'm not sure how many he has left (he can chime in on this question).. but i just wanted to say how great it is. a really cozy and personal little object.. and such a wonderful, simple idea.

i enjoyed reading it to my son the other day who proceeded to sound out each sound explained on the pages.
