OTHER MUSIC / Q&A with Phill Brown (later Talk Talk engineer)
« on: May 03, 2011, 07:54:52 pm »
there's a Q&A going on with Phill Brown over on Gearslutz. he was the engineer behind the seminal Talk Talk records... "spirit of eden" and "laughing stock"... it just got started, but if there's anyone to listen to when it comes to engineering and recording, this is the guy...

12K + LINE / japan
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:37:52 pm »
hi everyone

i'm sure many of you have been affected by the horrible news coming out of japan.. it's affected me deeply and sort of paralyzed me from getting anything else done in the last few days... falling behind on work for sure.

anyway, i just wanted to let you all know that all of the 12k artists from japan are safe and doing their best to cope.. and, as well, if you haven't heard, i'm donating all of the profits from the sales from the online shop for the rest of the month to an earthquake relief fund set up by new york's Japan Society.

you can find info on them here:

http://www.japansociety.org/news

horrible news and images every day.. .

interesting article here.. talking about how CD drives are being phased out of computers.... even if the CD is alive and well.. but no one can actually play them.... could be a problem..

http://createdigitalmusic.com/2011/02/with-mobility-rising-macbooks-looming-dont-assume-optical-discs-for-distribution/

of course, people DO have CD players in their cars/home stereos.... but a lot of people use their computers as CD players and, of course, to rip the CD to MP3...

just never thought about the topic from this angle before...

12K + LINE / LINE LABEL RE-LAUNCHED
« on: January 13, 2011, 11:45:36 am »
as some of you have heard already, the LINE label has been re-launched and is now a separate label, not a 12k sub-label, run by Richard Chartier.

this has been a long time in the making and it not only frees me up a bit of my valuable time but allows Richard to grow the label with a new sense of freedom.

because many people are accustomed to buying their 12k and LINE releases at the same time, i will still act as a mailorder stop for LINE and you can buy them as normal from the 12k shop (though richard raised the prices by $1). there is also a shop on the line website as well.

the new LINE website is:

http://www.lineimprint.com/

and i wish Richard the best in managing the baby all by himself! i'll still work closely with him at first to help him iron out the kinks and we'll work together on new musical projects.. hell, i'm hoping to one day have my own solo CD on LINE one of these years! :)

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / if 12k weren't to exist as a label...
« on: November 10, 2010, 02:26:46 pm »
one of the greatest things about running 12k is my, however limited, ability to support artists and get their music out there... this is also one of the saddest losses that file sharing is responsible for. i feel really really horrible when i see one of my artists' albums that they worked so hard on available on some mediafire site a day after the CD is released... i feel personally responsible.

if 12k were to cease existing as a traditional label it would likely continue as a source for just my own productions.. where the responsibility of trying to support other artists in this climate didn't exist.

fortunately, i don't see this happening too soon because the current crop of artists i do work with are all very happy with 12k and understand the difficulties in trying to stay afloat in this industry.

but, i guess the point of this thread was that if labels ceased to exist, the result would probably be individual artists acting as their own "label" and perhaps forming communities that way.

however, i think the need for label-as-curator is still a pretty important one.. and hopefully one of the survival traits of labels.

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / CDs are dead (almost)
« on: November 10, 2010, 10:13:19 am »
wether we like it or not... people just don't want CDs...

vinyl is still a specialist market.. cassettes are passing kitsch. legal download sales are on the rise, but not enough to cover the losses of CDs.

so, listeners want music for free... so what's an artist or label supposed to do?

special packages? books, boxes, etc? great.. beautiful, but really expensive....

CD-R? never taken as seriously....

just some ideas to get this going...

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / are record labels relevant anymore?
« on: November 10, 2010, 10:11:19 am »
i'd love to believe that labels are an important curatorial tool.. but the public seems to be speaking otherwise. or are they? is there a point to have a label anymore?
