OTHER MUSIC / Re: What are you listening to?
« on: February 23, 2011, 11:16:32 am »
I'd go with A Static Place. Listened to both albums just yesterday. While A Static Place convinced me from the very beginning and has been a nice listen for the past few weeks, I still didn't make it past track 4 on Ravedeath, 1972. Rather tiring underwhelming.

I've had the same experience, I just figured my head was elsewhere at the time. Both occasions I've sat down to listen to Ravedeath, 1972, I've completely lost interest midway through.

I've liked A Static Place quite a bit, but the new Remain on Line I've liked even more.

SELF PROMOTION / Re: My music-a-day project - SIGHUPyear

the year that i spent on doing my dust breeding projects every day still is one of the most productive and important years i've ever had.
Including making a baby girl, if I recall correctly. My son's almost eight, and I'm good with the one child, so no babies in this project.

Your project and Taylor's sound a day project were big inspirations to me in general, as have been the oo-ray tracks of the week. I like the anticipatory routine of these kinds of projects. I'm excited that moonmilk's annual instrument-a-day project just started: http://www.moonmilk.com/2011/02/02/instrument-a-day-1-lumpy-guitar/

I may even try to make some instruments for tracks on this project. Something I've never really done before.

Thanks.

I'll only be posting one or two peices a month on Soundcloud. I would recommend following the RSS feed if you want to get each daily post:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/SIGHUPyear

At the beginning of the project, I considered using Soundcloud, but I figured I would need a Pro account at minimum to house 365 files. Since I pay for web server space already, and my server's uptime is generallly better than Soundcloud's, I decided it would be best to save my money.

A bump for this to note I've made it to the one-month mark for the project. Yay!

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: Chance and random composing tools
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:20:25 am »
Like Taylor, I tend to use random tools as a starting point, then edit the results to something seemingly not random. Especially noises and field recordings, where I work with whatever I'm able to capture.

I have a small modular synth, and one of the modules I have is the Zorlon Cannon, which creates series of pseudo-random gates. I use those a lot, especially as a clock source for fixed sequences so that it runs through the same eight notes, but at irregular intervals.

In terms of software, I use the probability functions on Replicant quite a lot. I also use the slice randomization on Liveslice a lot until I come across a sequence I like, then I fine tune it. I very rarely sequence MIDI, so don't use random MIDI tools much. I really like the randomizing and probability functions on the sequencer on the drumsynth plugin Tattoo, but I don't have much call to use it often given my preferred way of working.

Love that album, certainly among my favourites of last year.

Thanks for listening.

That's odd that more than one track would play, must be a bug in the audio plugin I use. But it's good to know the tracks layer nicely.

I completely missed the text on the bottom. Tired eyes I guess, thanks for pointing it out. I wonder if the looper will be an isolated function, or if it'll loop in any delay mode.

I'm excited about this, lot of possibilities in those different modes. But, does it have any looping functions? Looking at the controls, it doesn't seem like it to me.

SELF PROMOTION / My music-a-day project - SIGHUPyear
« on: January 16, 2011, 11:25:09 am »
I find thing-a-day projects really inspiring, like Marcus's dustbreeding blog in 2009, Taylor's Polaroid and sound-a-day projects, the moonmilk instrument-a-day projects every February. On New Year' Day, I found myself in-between major projects, and on the spur of the moment, I decided to start a music-every-day project for the year.

http://2011.sighup.ca

It's meant to be a daily sketchbook sort of thing, and I'm pleased with the results thus far. Sixteen clips already up, as befits the calendar's progress.

I've set up a radio player in the sidebar of the site for anyone inclined to shuffle through the tracks, and started a set on Soundcloud to post highlights now and again: http://soundcloud.com/sighup/sets/sighupyear/

I'm their alpha/beta tester, so have all their plugins and use them as my primary set of effects. Beat-sync is often a main focus for them, although most of their stuff can be used outside of that. I love Eos, it's become the one plugin I wouldn't want to go without.

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: Facebook
« on: December 03, 2010, 04:25:52 pm »
I never started on facebook and see how carefree I am?   ;D

ditched myspace months ago and haven't looked back.  I guess this prompts a larger question about the necessary evil of social networking, but also the real effectiveness of it for "people like us"
I tried Facebook for a while and absolutely hated it, it just seems like it's the web for people who miss AOL. I guess it would be good if I was inclined to keep in touch with people I knew in high school, but I'm not, and I found it tedious to try to keep personal stuff separate from music/public stuff. I actually made a few good contacts through Myspace at the height of its popularity, but then its utility dissipated pretty quickly as it became more of way to encourage sycophancy than any kind of valuable networking.

I deleted many of my "social media" accounts a year or so ago. At a certain point it just becomes too much to maintain for minimal gain.
