i'm interested in the Live Looper in audiomulch.. but there's no way to pitch shift your loops.. is there?

i'd build following chain

loop/file player/soundin --> dlgranulator or nebuliser (has a shifter and filter) or even pulsecomb (all have pitch shifting slider) --> live looper

not a signle unit contraption but will work

In that chain, I think the pitchshifter would be better after the looper, so that you could play a single loop at various pitches without having to record the loop again.

But the trouble with that scenario is that you can't change pitch by slowing the loop's playback down, which I think is the main benefit of the function in a looper. You can stretch playback out with dlgranulator, but it isn't designed to be done in real time.

No, I don't think there is any way to do that. The Livelooper is rudimentary, no real control over anything but record and playback. The Canonlooper is similarly limited in function.

What I am trying to find out is information about people working with Ableton (or simmilar commercial electronic tools) who are not in the dance, ambient or field recording thing (since there are so many of them out there).

Robert Ashley is using Ableton Live, write-ups of his most recent opera, Concrete, noted that the loops were all triggered in Live.

morton subotnik may use modern tools as he's still active in playing live and stuff.. but i don't know for sure...

Yeah, there's a video interview with him that shows him using Ableton Live. I'll see if I can find a link to it.

I'm not sure which direction the nomenclature runs on this, but I'd have figured that most of the music that gets talked about on this website could be considered electroacoustic/acousmatic, and I'm guessing many use software like Live. Along the lines of Steve Reich (since they've worked together), Todd Reynolds (Bang on a Can violinist) uses Ableton Live extensively.

I'm an audiomulch junkie. Also everything I do is through audiomulch at some point or another.

Me, too. It's always the first thing I open to do anything.

The only one I can think of is Image Line's Edison. Its editing functions can be a nuisance to work with, but it does work well in Audiomulch, and lets you drag samples into the LoopPlayer and FilePlayer modules:

Windows only though. I'm so accustomed to using Sound Forge for editing sounds that I don't use Edison often, but it can be nice to have everything in one place.

It's funny, Silence is I think the only Monolake album that I like. At times, it does feel a bit like a technical demonstration, but on the whole I enjoy it.

I use both plugins and pedals, often interchangeably, and enjoy doing so. One thing I like about working with software is being less in the moment, being able to do some work, walk away, and start where you left off, go back and change what you've done. It's a different process from playing, much more like score writing or painting. Strangely, I find I approach software as a slower process than working with hardware, which is a very in the moment kind of thing.

There are still a lot of things you can do in software that are difficult or at least really pricey to do well with standalone hardware: granular effects, FFT-based spectral processing, complex multi-tap delays. Even fully stereo signal chains can be difficult to achieve with pedals, since so many are mono devices. That at least has gotten better in recent years with the advent of Eventide stompboxes, strymon, jomox, oto biscuit, etc.

To answer one of the initial questions, one thing that software has a tough time capturing that is inherent to analogue devices is irregularity. Individual components in, for example, a fuzz pedal have a lot of influence on the end result and are context sensitive (change with input gain, room temperature, power fluctuations), and so you are working with something unique, albeit at times rather subtly so. 112db's retro sampler Morgana is I think the only software I've seen that tries to model irregularity with a function that allows you to calculate filter coefficients unique to your system. I wish more softwre developers would explore that technique. The upside of the absence of irregularity is reliability, which software has in spades.

Along similar lines as what Taylor said, standalone hardware devices offer a certain immediacy that software lacks, just by occupying a physical place in the world, and offer natural limitations. They also require a lot of dicking around with power supplies, storage and cabling, the like of which can be enough to drive you to software.
