STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Are subs essential in a small studio?
« on: April 19, 2013, 05:53:17 am »
Hi Guys,
I'm about to invest a little more in my home studio set up. I have a great pair of Adam A7x's which are perfect for the size of the room. My first thought was to add a sub7 so i can better hear the full range of frequencies in my mixes.  My music (The Inventors of Aircraft- ambient, electronic etc.) while not bass heavy like a lot of beat based music it still has a lot going on in the lower frequencies - as most of you know, once you start pitching sounds down, stretching sounds etc the lower frequencies quickly fill and sometimes i can only hear this lower end on headphones and not so much on the A7x's. My first thought was subs, but reading around a bit i'm wondering if this isn't the solution and my money might be better spent on more acoustic treatment for the room. I wanted to get the opinion of people making similar music to me- does anyone think subs are essential? will they help me to hear my mixes more clearly? thanks, Phil

Where I build up chains of audio/modules/plugins for each part and then do all my sequencing/triggering in the automation lanes. I don't ever do any MIDI sequencing, so this way actually works better to my way of thinking than any other DAW. You can place mixers anywhere in the signal chain, so you're able to automate an unrestricted number of inserts/sends.

interesting! so it is a kind of multi track/multi instrument environment in a way? can you control the automation in the lanes with a control surface ? via MIDI?   thanks for the info, am going to check out the audiomulch site a bit more

how do you audiomulch guys compose with it? is it a case of mixing down each 'project' to an audio file and editng in a DAW? or is there another way? (I am right in thinking you can't bring audiomulch into any DAW as a vst and compose there?)
because it does look/sound nice, but not sure how i'd fit it into my setup
