ONE THOUSAND PULSES presents

An Evening with ROBERT RICH

Robert Rich hardly needs an introduction to members & trawlers of this forum. No doubt across three decades and over 30 albums, Rich has helped define numerous electronic music genres, be they ambient, dark-ambient, tribal and trance, yet his music remains hard to categorize. Part of his unique sound comes from using homemade acoustic and electronic instruments, microtonal harmonies, computer-based signal processing, chaotic systems and feedback networks.

Rich began building his own analog synthesizers in 1976, when he was 13 years old, and later studied for a year at Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), releasing his first album, Sunyata, in 1982. Most of his subsequent recordings came out in Europe until 1989, when Rich began a string of critically acclaimed releases for Fathom/Hearts of Space, including Rainforest, Gaudí, Propagation, and Seven Veils, in addition to the two esteemed collaborations with Steve Roach, Strata and Soma. Rich has also worked with fellow luminaries Alio Die, Brian Lustmord & Ian Boddy, all of which yielded their own particularly fetching & expertly designed topographies.

Live albums such as Calling Down the Sky and the three-CD set, Humidity, document the unique improvised flow of his performances. As anyone who has witnessed him on stage over the last 20+years, a live Rich performance is an often stunning sensorium of liquified electronic textures underpinned by multi-kulti rhythms, wind instruments, languid washes of guitar and numerous other exotic acoustics, an experience not to be missed.

ONE THOUSAND PULSES presents

An Evening with SPYRA

FOR DIRECTIONS & FURTHER INFORMATION:
http://www.onethousandpulses.com

Having transcended such genre stereotypes as Berlin School, post-techno, and krautrock, Wolfram der Spyra has steadily assumed a rightful position as one of Germany's finest exporters of progressive electronic music. Born in the early 60s, Spyra's fascination with radiowaves & broadcast signals, filtered through Eno-esque ambience & 90s dance rhythms birthed his first recording, Home Listening is Killing Clubs. As a regular participant at such festivals as E-Live and Hampshire Jam, Spyra's forged partnerships both live & in performance with Bernd Friedmann, instrumental builder Robert Rutman, Detlef Keller & Mario Schonwalder, as well as playing as part of the Ricochet Gatherings musicians collective.

Spyra's chroma-key atmospheres and tense rhythmic patterns eventually led to a continuing affiliation/collaboration with pioneer Pete Namlook & his Fax imprint, though from the 90s up until today Spyra's produced a slew of fine recordings for such labels as Wigwam, Manikin & Ricochet Dream. His most recent Fax release, January in June, seamlessly marries keyboard prog wizardry to his patented analog fundamentals, demonstrating Spyra's chameleonic habit of straddling numerous soundworlds, a rich, powerful blend of layered post-Tangerine Dreamisms and dense percussive workouts.

ONE THOUSAND PULSES presents:

An Evening with ERALDO BERNOCCHI www.onethousandpulses.com

Eraldo Bernocchi first emerged in the mid 1980s as part of the famed underground group Sigillum S. After spending the decade building a cult following throughout Europe and the US, the 90s saw Bernocchi steadily expanding his musical partnerships and endeavors. Collaborations with Italian artists such as Afa and Almamegretta, as well as the formation of multi-media company Verba Corrige Productions with Petulia Mattioli raised Bernocchi's profile and began to showcase his eclectic sensibilities.

Besides becoming a sought-after remixer, Bernocchi's launched his SIMM project, and found time to collaborate with such stalwart colleagues as Mick Harris, Bill Laswell, Toshinori Kondo, Harold Budd, & Thomas Fehlmann. In 2009, Bernocchi co-founded Rare Noise Records, whose first releases included new work from Laswell-collaborator/guitarist Buckethead's Death Cube K persona, a new project from Laswell called Method of Defiance, Meditronica (Paolo Polcari and Ashtech) and Bernocchi's Parched duo with Davide Teiso. Throughout these pursuits, Bernocchi expertly navigates the varied sonic contours mapped across the blasted landscapes of beat-intensive electronica, drum 'n' bass, dubstep, and blackhole atmospherica. He promises to bring both a set of deepest ambient & rhythmic complexity to his OTP debut.

OTP is pleased to present composer and lute player Jozef van Wissem, renowned for his unusual approach to the renaissance and baroque lute, cutting and pasting classical pieces, reversing melodies, and adding electronics & processed field recordings to the lute’s rich, historic soundfield.

The unusual wedlock of composition and improvisation creates an unheard amalgam of contemporary folk and late renaissance music. van Wissem has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of 17th-century lute literature and 21st-century composition. Although he uses subtle electronic sound manipulation, van Wissem has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. Yet his music does not progress in a traditional linear fashion, nor does it lead to predictable climaxes.

In addition to being a composer, van Wissem runs the Incunabulum label and performs extensively around the world, has worked with improvisor/guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama, sound-sculpturist Maurizio Bianchi, experimentalists Smegma, among others, and has lectured at at Wesleyan universtity, Mills College and Cambridge University on “the liberation of the lute”.

One Thousand Pulses presents: An Evening with RICHARD LAINHART

SATURDAY, MARCH 6

ADMISSIONLOCATION 9 Edward Place, Woodcliff Lake NJ 07677 USA

FOR TIX PURCHASE, DIRECTIONS, & FURTHER INFO:
www.onethousandpulses.com

Well-versed in the varied applications of his beloved Buchla boxes, yet equally agile on numerous synths, keyboards, vibes, and guitars, Richard Lainhart has been reorganizing the topography of tone and texture for over 30 years. Lainhart has performed and worked with John Cage, David Tudor, Steve Reich, Phill Niblock, David Behrman, and many others. His 1987 debut recording, These Last Days, remains an unsung classic of post-academic computer music thanks to its beguiling, animated sequences, charged momentum, and subtle reorganization of electronic and acoustic sounds. Since childhood, Lainhart has been interested in natural processes such as waves, flames and clouds, in harmonics and harmony, and in creative interactions with machines, using them as compositional methods to present sounds and images that are as beautiful as he can make them.
