thanks!

that keith rowe line up looks promising - are things like that likely to sell out before the evening itself? somehow the diapason site is not friendly to my browser (?) - site seems a bit buggy + i can't find info about tickets etc on the site..

i might visit the 22nd - why the hell not.. :)

SELF PROMOTION / wixel 2009
« on: February 23, 2010, 03:18:40 pm »
hello,

i had this project last year where i made one album each month. the initial fancy artwork editions are sold out, but the 12 discs are now available as lovingly crafted paperbacks. it's cd-r, cardboard, printed and i did my best to make it look good.

styles range from acoustic nylon guitar compositions, to noisy field recordings from norway over indiepop tunes and ambient. (mostly one style per month - i suppose 12k folks would like "february" and "august" the best.)

if you're interested in getting a copy, you can do so here: http://www.wixel.be/2009 - you'll find sound samples & descriptions.

if you want to read someone's opinion on the whole project, you can read the silent ballet's take on it here: http://www.thesilentballet.com/dnn/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Details/mid/384/ItemID/3021/Default.aspx

that's it..

OTHER MUSIC / Re: some nice thoughts from DJ Shadow
« on: February 23, 2010, 03:01:47 pm »
even though i'm not of the opinion that music without a price attached has no value, he does make some interesting remarks. money is a huge factor in the creation of music, no doubt. investment is important, and the current climate is not attractive to put money in new music. especially not the kind that only exists to be listened to. music that isn't there to promote concerts, soundtrack games, or other moneymaking areas is rather doomed.

yet i don't see how this will ever be changed. i don't think music is lacking in quality these days. there's a lot of bad stuff out there, but there's also a lot of good stuff, despite the lack of investments. in fact, when i think of my favourite records, lots of them have been made with modest funding. would it be a better world if they got an expensive marketing campaign? yet it would be more fair if they earned some money with it..

hmm  - maybe this little rant doesn't contribute a lot to the debate, but it remains an interesting and complicated puzzle.

anyways, dj shadow. i like endtroducing a lot, but never bought an other record of him... seems like that one is just right/enough for me.

OTHER MUSIC / Re: Full album streams
« on: January 26, 2010, 02:22:55 pm »
i don't oppose to full album streams. but neither am i of the opinion that all albums should be made available for streaming..

what i do think is that most money in the music industry is and will be made from shows and licensing, and from that perspective a full album stream cleary has an advantage over any 2 track preview or less. so in my humble opinion, performing artists & bands - especially those who have a big enough audience to warrant frequent touring - should and will make their latest album available for streaming. i think that's unstoppable, money is always an important motivator. it's an "industry" afterall ...

obviously there are always ifs and buts. a band like sonic youth won't benefit from a full album stream, i doubt album sales would benefit from a full album stream (unless it's an unknown band), ...

too me it does say a lot more than a few snippets. maybe i'm already used to full album streaming, as in the netherlands you have "luisterpaal" a website that always streams about 20 new releases. (legally!) (http://3voor12.vpro.nl/luisterpaal/) right now including four tet, jaga jazzist, lindstrom, richard skelton, ... at work I always go through most of the releases available, just playing an entire record instead of a few songs.

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: the constant desire for NEW
« on: January 17, 2010, 02:24:01 pm »
hello. i wanted to chime in on this one too even though i have not much to add.

sometimes i feel i want to get out of these internet lives we're all living.. i think about 90% of my friends (and me too) are on the internet more than several hours per day, each day - which is quite amazing when we didn't have internet at all 15 years ago. i find it very refreshing to spend time in nature and not bringing a laptop or a phone. simple 2 week or 3 week trips can work miracles. cause face it, how else am i going to check out about new music? :)

i'm also all for limiting oneself.. for one of my records from last year, i limited myself to just one instrument and no plugins. just a basic acoustic guitar and i found it hugely rewarding to compose in what seems to be a very limited world, but in fact is enormous. a mind then becomes very creative in finding ways to bend the rules..

haha! :-D
as for autechre, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, but to me it's always at least interesting when they release something.

listened to the new eels record today, but didn't seem to move me much despite the incredible reviews in belgian press...

ART / Re: machinefabriek: take a closer listen

i like the sound of getting wet laundry out of the washing machine, and "shake it straight", to hang it on a drying line. (i hope i'm understandable, cause i feel like my english is failing me)

and: heavy rainfall on a tent when you're inside of it. awesome surround.

and: waterfalls.

and many many more :)
