SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Nord Modular/Modular G2
« on: June 04, 2013, 06:10:59 am »

Having said that, a dusty MS20 can't be bad :D

Your selling your G2 and keeping your G1, know you have to tell me more about this decision. I have never used the G2, but hear they do differ in sound a fair bit, but your going to sell it?

I am sure I will keep my G1, even if I do get a G2 in the future (££ depending), although I was eyeing the G1 keyboard the other day…I think it looks amazing, and I know I would use it even more if it looked that tasty, plus having a keyboard version would be a good addition and change the patching that little bit.

(I think I will be adding up a patch in Doepfer world this weekend…what have you done to me ha )

hey guys!

martin, G2´s are fantastic ..in fact was impressed years ago with some crazy patches I found from an EM user (think granular-chopping and freeze fx!), but right now I´m more interested in playing real instruments than programming in front of a screen. I love my old G1, and surely I´ll keep it for years, because is my all-time fav synth. and yes, for me it sounds (and looks!!) better than my Engine :)

agree with karl there are great modules out there (eurorack-samplers too?)  and basic systems for your needs ...but right now need keeping simplicity and space at home. really happy with my guitars and old synths!

btw, I love these Buchla giant systems :P

salud!

On another note, I keep seeing images of your's and others growing modular set-ups, me and Lucia are always so tempted to start on that road…£££ though :)

hello martin!

loved the idea of a real system, but I desisted months ago. I´m  happy with my G1 (right now I´m selling my G2 Engine...not using it).

As a long time NM user, I´m curious about real modulars "compared" with NM architecture (mainly in modules, it´s obvious the real ones sound better!).

years ago, liked the idea of a basic system, because my nm patches are super simple, but when comparing some of them with the real thing (using a basic doepfer config, not expensive modules: dual osc, env, lfo, filter, mult, mixer) the whole thing was almost 1500-1700€ including the case + power unit...so I decided to save my euros and keep my dusty ms20 :)

I´d love to know about the real ones!

best,
pug

Brian!

nice to see you here! I´ll take a listen to them!
last night listened to another one you know:

the ocean blue - ultramarine
soo good!...liked it a lot ;)

Alex,

In regards to that 90's indie/dreampop sound, I think you would really like the latest album from Slowness. So good. Reminds me of Engineers with a touch of Catherine Wheel - sounds like it was born in 1991.

a little bit dissapointed with the update..was expecting some functions as the boomerang... but hey, great they´ve added loop banks. (no undo function yet ???)
surely I´ll sell my 2880 + foot controller...still happy with the dl4+jamman combo here

Borderlands is really fantastic. I don't have an iPad, but I've compiled a version to run on my laptop and it's a fun and beautiful granular engine.

Edit: Oh, and I almost forgot!... I've never used it, but if you are an OP-1 fan you might want to check out Samplr: http://samplr.net

+1 for both :)

I add iterator: funny, simple, a now it´s free (oval fans will love it):

I sample the op-1 a lot into my boss sp 303 and get some nice stuff out of this combination. the effects on the sp 303 is quite useful if you want gritty/dirty lofiness. All in all, I am happy I have the op-1 but still feel it is overpriced.

pardon from the off-topic, but I´m using a lot my sp-404 as a multitrack recorder lately (that thing can store-trigger lots of minutes on a single pad). not sure if the sp-303 has the "lo-fi recording mode", funny feature.  I found the sp´s really useful onstage too..and they´re cheap! :)

not sure I understand, If you keep the level slider all the way up on the track you record onto, the original signal should not get lost. I actually use the "slow drown out" thing a lot... I usually go down to 60% as then the loop evolves more as it changes if you play on top...

thanks a lot rené.
my fault: was overdubbing with the track slider at 50%. (I usually play with ultralow levels at home, but this pedal sounds louder than I expected)

semi-false alarm. seems to be the card, the mpc could format it but not write or read... however, i wonder why the card was f***ed up, it was only one year old and exclusively used in the 2880...

glad you solved it. found some format issues on the ehx forum:

nb: after playing with mine last weekend, I find the 2880 a great sounding device, but I don´t catch that "feedback-fader" function when overdubbing on a single track (I´d like to keep sounding the original loop on the top...not erasing it on each  overdubbing cycle...the same thing happens on the hazarai...any tip?).

thanks!

Btw, I asked ehx about "hot swapping" the cf cards as I did not want to f' up my looper
... the official answer was:
"As long as the 2880 is not recording, overdubbing or playing back a loop, you can swap the cards. That should not present any problems."

thanks a lot guys. I had some card headaches both on my sp404-h2 too :)

this device with loop banks would my perfect excuse to leave the computer aside (especially onstage)

thanks a lot for your help!

my holidays are closer and I always bring my jamman for recording ideas. grabbed the 2880 also for this, but (in a live context) was wondering about having 2-3 cards onstage to load different sessions. sounds a little bit weird but I´ll try how it works ( did the same thing with two small samplers years ago )

time for buying cards then!

best,
pug

..another 2880 (newbie) user here.
has been a pain saving and looking for (a brand new) one...but I always missed  an small device w/ separated tracks per loop.

I Iknow there are some enthusiasts from the 2880 here, and I´d like to ask a simple question (still reading the manual):

- If I´m not wrong, you can only use the whole memory/card available for a "single" session, no loop banks like the jamman or  boss rc series. right? I´d like to know if the 2880 is fast or takes its time when loading sessions from cards (i.e: filled with 2-3 minute loops per track)

thanks a lot!
