SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Fm synthesis "tips & advices"
« on: September 09, 2012, 07:14:54 am »
Hi Philippe,

I have been exploring FM synthesis a lot recently since I've been using a TX81z (a four operator synth).  The most useful guide I've come across is called FM Theory and Applications, by John Chowning, the man who created FM synthesis.

Here is a link to the PDF I found of the book, which is out of print (yes, the domain has a strange name, but it's fine.:

If you are interested in hearing some of my experiments with FM synthesis, check out my blog noisecycle.com.

Thanks for posting this!  It looks like it would be a pretty easy kit to put together.

I've been shooting with my Polaroid Spectra and some expired film, which seems to have a warm orange look to it.  I posted some on my creative thing-a-day blog (I'm halfway through the year):

The photos are of a park in Pittsburgh, where I live.  The Spectra is my favorite Polaroid camera.

This is a great idea and I love cooking.  I thought I would share something that I've been making.

Recently, I got a Vitamix blender, which is really powerful, so if you don't have one, you could make this with a food processor/regular blender.  I've been making this everyday for the past week and I feel amazing.  In the past I haven't eaten enough fruits and vegetables and I've been changing my diet.  This is just called my "green drink":

1 cucumber (peeled and chopped)
Juice from 1 1/2 lemons
2 apples (chop into smaller pieces)
1 head of brocolli
1 1/2 cups of water (you can add some ice cubes too)
2 carrots (chopped into smaller pieces)
3 handfuls of spinach

To make it, you put all the ingredients into the Vitamix except for the spinach and blend them well.  After that, you add the handfuls of spinach and blend them too.  This makes a little more than 2 servings.  I've been having this for breakfast or lunch.  Enjoy! :)

Wow, that looks/sounds great.  That effects loop really opens a lot of possibilities.  I don't know if I need it though since I have a freeze and cathedral.  :-\

Hi guys,

I started a thing-a-day blog on January 1st this year.  I was inspired by a couple of blogs - Marcus Fischer's Dust Breeding in particular, Jared Smyth's Uprlip, Charlie Visnic's B-Roll, and even Taylor's sound a day project.

Here is the address if you are interested in checking it out:

Thanks,

COMPUTER MUSIC / Re: DAW opinion considering the sound quality

I've been using Logic for a couple years and before that I used Pro Tools.  I think for the money, you get a lot of great bundled plugins.

If I were you, I would go with a DAW based on how you will produce music (home studio vs live).  I think Ableton is the most versatile if I had to pick only one.

Billy - thanks for sharing that application (vst to au) - I didn't know you could do that for free.

Logic definitely does NOT support VST plugins.  It only supports Audio Unit (AU) plugins.  It has a great MIDI editor.  Ableton supports both VST and AU plugins and is pretty user friendly.

FIELD RECORDING / Re: Recording with the iPhone

So, I thought it would be a good idea to post a recent discovery...I was looking to see if they updated the PCM Recorder app to add some sort of functionality so you could import audio to your computer.  It turns out that the functionality was there all along!  You can import the files you record from itunes in the apps - file sharing tab of the iphone settings.

So with that being said, it is a fantastic app and I will stop using the Blue FiRe app I was using previously.

Taylor, I looked into the iM2 from Tascam and even downloaded the app to see how that works too.  Strangely, the app only lets you export to Soundcloud...that's it!  That seems weird to me.

I didn't see a line in on the tascam, looking at their spec page.

My hesitation with these things is that they become obsolete pretty quickly...for example, the Blue Mikey was a stereo microphone that came out for iPod and then iPhone but was obsolete once the iPhone 4 came out because Apple changed something with the way audio devices worked with the dock connector.

It depends on the track, but I used an Avalon 737sp tube preamp on some of it, amp simulators on some as well.  Transporter was a Mesa/Boogie guitar amp.  For some of the tracks, I used a plug in called KT Granulator, which totally transforms sounds into something else.  If there is anything specific, let me know and I'll try to to recall it.

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Any good reverb effects pedals

On that note, I got a Furman RV-1 spring reverb (rackmount) for around $70-80.  It's a little noisy and muddy, but I like it.  I run things out to it from my interface for processing.
