Marcus Fischer  |  Collected Dust |   TCH05  |   digipak   |   January 31, 2012

Release page (streaming of two songs and pre-order available):  http://www.tenchrec.com/TCH05.html
Review at Fluid Radio:  http://www.fluid-radio.co.uk/2012/01/marcus-fischer-collected-dust

Release description:  From January 2009 through January 2010, Marcus kept a blog called Dust Breeding to document the results of his goal to complete one creative project a day for 365 days. These projects included photographs, field recordings, design, illustration, sewing, videos, DIY electronics experiments and music. He reached his goal of one full year of daily entries and has continued to add entries over the last few years, though less frequently.

Each piece on Collected Dust first appeared in its original form on Dust Breeding. After being selected for this collection by M. Ostermeier, each piece was updated and refined further by Marcus. The patient, reflective, and peaceful style found on Collected Dust's seven tracks inhabits a space somewhere near that of his debut CD for 12k, Monocoastal, which landed on many best-of-2010 lists, and his recent In a Place of Such Graceful Shapes collaboration with Taylor Deupree, who mastered this recording.

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: are record labels relevant anymore?
« on: November 16, 2010, 09:57:49 pm »
I began buying and listening to music in the 80s.

One issue not mentioned yet, I think, is the consequences of the fact that the amount of music released now (on physical labels, on net-labels, by the artists themselves, etc.) is just ENORMOUS compared to before.  While I can't bring myself to say that the availability of affordable technology for artists to create and record music (and labels to release and promote music) is a bad thing, it has resulted in an ever increasing number of possible songs that the music fan can buy (if they do buy) and as a result any one release's share gets smaller and smaller.

A related point is that this sea of music is mostly filled with bad to mediocre music, and the music genre's that are the subject of this forum are not immune from this.  I think it is hard for the average music fan to distinguish the great from the mediocre.  And in the music we all love here I think what is great is much more subjective than in most genres.  Also, I think it is relatively easy in these genres to make mediocre music.  Music that we hear and say "Yeah, that's OK."  This only adds to the problem for us.  I think there is a lot of "OK" music out there.   I spend a lot of time trying to find the great music.   And this is where labels can help tremendously.

I think the role of the label can be to separate the great from the mediocre (as had been said many times already).  It can also be to make an artistic statement (the label as art). (12k is a beautiful example of both of these).  But, starting a label is so much easier now than it used to be (distribution difficulties aside) that there are so many labels and maybe we have the same problem again but this time at the level of the label.

And I say this admitting that I myself have added to the problem by starting a label this year.

M. Ostermeier  |  Chance Reconstruction  |  TCH01  |  Aug 2010  |  digipak

Percolate (Parvo Art, 2010) featured his acoustic and Rhodes piano mixed with Labradford-esque guitars over minimal electronic beats.  On Lakefront (Hibernate, 2010) the beats had evaporated and the infusion of electronic textures and field recordings yielded something more organic, more haunting.  Throughout, the fragmented piano established a melancholic and reflective mood but more through style than through melody.  These releases garnered strong reviews in The Wire, Textura, and The Silent Ballet for juxtaposing melancholic stillness with restrained post-rock urgency.

Here on Chance Reconstruction, his first full-length release, both mood and melody come into focus.  The acoustic piano provides a warmth and familiarity that offsets the abstract electronics and field recordings that decorate the periphery.  Unlike the thick melancholy that filled every corner of Lakefront, Chance Reconstructionhttp://www.tenchrec.com/TCH01.html

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: Best cheapo monitors?
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:14:38 am »

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/213841-REG/Alesis_MONITOR_ONE_MKII_PAIR__Monitor_One_Mk2_Monitors.html

i've been kicking the first version of these for almost 10 years.

I recommend a similar Alesis monitor: Alesis M1 Active mk2 (which I think are about $300).    I used these for many years and only this year upgraded to Adam-A7, which are better but they are not a huge improvement to my ears.

One caveat: if you search users reviews you will find a lot of complaints that the Alesis M1 Active mk2 suddenly stops working.  I have found that the tweeter occasionally (a couple of times a year) will cut out completely.   But if you crank the volume, it will come back on again in a couple of seconds and it is good for another 6 months or so.  Both speakers do this.
