Two really great science fiction movies that i saw recently was "Primer" and "One point O" .
agreed on "Primer", that's a film I rewatch periodically to attempt to wrap my brain around.

getting away from sci-fi for a moment, I rewatched "clean, shaven" recently and remembered how layered and interesting the sound design was. Lodge Kerrigan made another somewhat similar film "keane" which was also pretty good, but not quite the same in terms of soundtrack design. kind of up there with "eraserhead" as far as soundtrack collage goes.

never let me go

how is this one? i'm looking forward to see it next week.

I know reactions were mixed, but I really enjoyed it. As a huge science fiction fan, I wish more of the genre was approached in this manner.

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: Facebook
« on: December 04, 2010, 08:04:14 pm »
I guess this prompts a larger question about the necessary evil of social networking, but also the real effectiveness of it for "people like us"
I agree with this. This arena of sound-art we are in is a fairly narrow niche, and doesn't necessitate a broad promotional vehicle like any of the aforementioned social networks anymore. Maybe a few years ago this was the case, but it seems like access points have been streamlined for individuals seeking this type of output for the most part, and are consistently becoming more streamlined and consolidated. I find it more interesting to frequent boards like this that congregate individuals with the wherewithal of whats what than the cesspool of social networking where one needs to filter through a mass of garbage to find any kind of nugget of value.

I've left my myspace and facebook pages active, primarily as a means at this point to drive interested parties to my personal website. thats about it.

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Meeblip

Kinda knew you two would have something to say about it! Really just interesting to see more kits like this turn up, looking forward to seeing what kinds of strange customizations begin appearing.
And all of the proselytizing for the Shruthi-1 almost has me on the bandwagon! ( If it weren't sold out everytime I thought to check the site! )

COMPUTER MUSIC / Re: linux?
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:59:49 am »
again- I don't intend on giving up my mac. I'm simply throwing the idea around of putting together a linux based rig to explore it. As with most things on linux there is an equivalent of most popular software packages available elsewhere, and I don't see one particular application striking my fancy per se, or doing things I can't already do. I suppose there is just something attractive to me about it being all open source and free from any corporate influence, and I am interested in seeing if switching to the alternative would be possible. So really I am just curious to see if anyone out there uses linux and achieves quality output with it.

COMPUTER MUSIC / linux?
« on: August 01, 2010, 10:43:49 am »
As most of you are I'm an apple guy all around, yet I recently installed the Ubuntu linux distro on my computer at work, and wow. Incredibly sexy and stable!

I'm all for open source and now thinking about putting together a linux based rig and/or dual booting on one of my macs. I've noticed the Ubuntu Studio package which collects a bunch of open source multimedia software. Ardour seems to be the big DAW out there and PD is the only option as Max isn't available for linux. I'm sure as the software is free it may be lacking in the features department, and don't plan on completely giving up my main production suite.

So the question is, any of you doing this? Is it more pain than its worth? I'm just starting to wrap my head around using the command line interface, but I think utilizing a completely open source platform and software is what the most appealing thing is to me.

importing old discs onto my new mbp- kind of became a Markus Popp/Sonig morning-

Oval-94diskont
Microstoria-Model 3, Step 2
SONIG-Sonig.Ilation

...amongst many others. realizing how many great discs I haven't listened to in some time are still really holding up well.

Feeling nostalgic this evening: a couple of albums that my father played quite a bit when I was a child-

Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays "As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls"
Jean-Luc Ponty "Individual Choice"

both seem dated in some respects, yet still ahead of their time in others.

I do notice that it has "multi-touch" technology.  I'm not sure how far that goes... but I do see potential in using this with a beefed up version of touchOSC in order to create lemuresque interfaces at a much lower price point.
This is what I was thinking, less a laptop replacement and more of a controller. lemur was the first thing that sprang to mind, not to mention monome or tenori-on-esque options. The price of the base model would make it an interesting possibilty for this purpose, that is, if an app is designed *and* approved by apple for this type of functionality.

the total itunes lockdown on this thing is a turnoff for sure, though.
