12K + LINE / Giuseppe Ielasi in the Wire (Jan 2011)
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:07:34 pm »
delighted to see one of my fave musicians get a 3 page feature in this months Wire mag.
for someone who seems to keep a fairly low profile, it's good to see him get some well deserved props in the media.
haven't read it yet, but I'll be settling down in front of the fire with it later on with a nice cup of tea and some mince pies.

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Facebook
« on: December 03, 2010, 08:20:07 am »
I noticed Taylor is having the same grief with regards facebook pages vs profiles.
I've always found this really confusing and annoying.
I'd rather be directing people to my artist page but most seem to just connect with my profile page.
I'm never sure which one to update with what and which people see what I post.

I'd just like to keep a profile page for people I know but still be able to get updates from them.
Also there doesn't seem to be a any way of friends even knowing I have a page from my profile, there's no links apparent anywhere.
Do I just keep sending messages to friends to like my pages or something?
I hate thinking I'm spamming folk all the time, but what to do?
I wish my profile url was my page url but probably too late for that as it wont let you change anything :(

Anyone got any good tips with regards all this confusion!?

COMPUTER MUSIC / Seagate ticking of death
« on: April 23, 2010, 07:47:42 pm »
Waved goodbye to my second Seagate Barracuda drive in 2 months today after it failed again.
Been reading lots of similar tales on the net too. All very frustrating.

Any recommendations for a decent internal audio drive? Quiet, 32mb buffer, 7200rpm etc.

OTHER MUSIC / Full album streams
« on: January 23, 2010, 08:19:39 am »
Just noticed Type Records have all their albums available on their website as full album streams using Soundcloud.
As I listen to nearly all my music at my computer, I've always been a bit wary of making my material available as full streams, seems a bit over generous.
Not sure if it would encourage me to buy the CD more if I'd heard the whole thing already unless it was something I really wanted to own.
When I buy something, I like that bit of a surprise when I first hear it and a few short previews is usually enough for me to know if I'm going to like it or not.
Maybe with filesharing so bad now and things like Spotify becoming more popular, is this the inevitable outcome?

Anyone with any thoughts on this?

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / FX pedals
« on: January 07, 2010, 05:19:25 pm »
Anyone use FX pedals/DIY gizmos in their live setup and if so what? (Particularly as desktop fx, but all you axe-lords, feel free to chime in).

I've been mucking about with some DIY pedals lately and quite enjoying it (tonebender, red llama, reverb, delay, envelope filter and a few others).
It's a nice break from staring at a computer screen.
Still thinking of how to best incorporate them into a live setup, I was thinking of maybe 3 or 4 fx chains of 3 or 4 pedals in each, going in and out of the interface.
I'm in the process of making some router/fx looper type boxes for versatility.
One thing I've been wondering about is how important impedance matching is when using a line level into the pedals and if it's worth getting a reamp box or something?

There's a lot of interesting non-traditional fx out there in DIY land these days.
The Gristleizer looks interesting:

Been looking at picking up some pcbs from 4ms too:
