SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Modular synthesis
« on: December 20, 2011, 08:09:59 pm »
I haven't gone with a full modular system... but I picked up the MOOG CP-251 CV processor and it really brought together all my CV capable gear (dark energy, little phatty with cv out mod, and MFOS kit based semi suitcase) into a weird semi modular monster.  Combining my gear, ableton, max, CV, and midi together... converting MIDI to CV to MIDI and back im really happy where things are heading... after being on a hiatus from recording for almost 3 years.

So I certainly recommend the CP-251 if your working with CV at all.

Edit: Wanted to comment too on the Dark Energy since it was mentioned above..... it comes in really handy in an environment like this using cv and midi equipment together as it features midi to cv conversion.

Routings can get a bit hairy in the various configurations... I think the best thing one can do is structure a graphic system for documenting your various routings.

Over the years in phases Ive worked with analog and digital individually... but rarely together.  Im enjoying bringing the control and processing aspects of both together.

You dont need a cms.  You can do this with any web server.
Here are a couple links explaining how to do that easily....

http://www.elated.com/articles/password-protecting-your-pages-with-htaccess/
http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess3.shtml

Really any decent web host (dreamhost is the best) should allow you to set that up right in your control panel.

Is that demos for the label portion or people looking for mail-order distro? Or combined I guess...

Anyway, that's still incredibly overwhelming, and I imagine quite a drag at that.

Combined.  Ehh I wouldnt call it a drag.  Im not complaining.  This is what I signed up for.  Its part of the 'job'.  Just like people to understand the challenges involved and why they may not get a reply.  I see people chastising BK and FE all the time for never sending a reply to their solicitations... and now im finding myself in the same boat.  Its just too much to reply to.  But I also dont want to discourage anyone from sending info.  As I dont too often find time to read review sites besides a few exceptions... my inbox is my link to the world.

*My advice that may help is keep your info organized and straight to the point...... get it all taken care of in one email.  Reduce inbox clutter.   But also keep it brief.  5 paragraph descriptions aren't necessary.  Simply the brief and important info and link to a download promo with album art.

This is what every solicitation email to a shop or distributor should contain....

Artist, Title, Label, Catalog Number, Country of Origin, Wholesale Cost, Edition, Format, Release Date, Brief Description, Link to Download Full album mp3 Promo (zipped and appropriately titled and tagged), Album Art Jpg

For the label's solicitations and promo Ive had allot of success by presenting the info in a complete and organized manner and have received a number of comments how much it is appreciated. I create simple private password protected pages for each release that contain all the info and resources press and shops might need.  This includes the info above plus a few other simple bells and whistles.

Of course there is no sure fire formula for getting your label attention.  But being organized and professional can help.  DIY doesn't have to equal unprofessional.

however, don't be put off if they refuse... there's just too much music out there these days!

Indeed.  An overwhelming amount.  Looking at around 100 solicitations a day lately.  As a music lover first and foremost you want to support everyone you can... but after a while its just not feasible.... no way I can vet all that and get my necessary daily tasks completed.  Its difficult to know where to begin. Information overload.  All consuming.  Persistence doesn't hurt.  Being organized with how you present your info and promos is important.

I am proud to announce the release of an absolutely stunning new sound object on the Experimedia label. Its an absolute privilege to be presenting this highly unique and gorgeous piece of work.

PIIPTSJILLING - WURDSKRIEME

Piiptsjilling is the quartet of Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek), Mariska Baars (Soccer Commitee), and the duo of Jan and Romke Kleefstra. Mastered by Taylor Deupree.

LIMITED 180GRAM 12INCH VINYL LP + INSTANT DOWNLOAD. Deluxe sleeve and labels printed with metallic inks. Your order of this title through Experimedia includes an immediate download of the album with bonus track and an Experimedia sticker. Special low preorder pricetag.

On their second full-length, experimental supergroup Piiptsjilling set out to both deepen and roughen up the pastoral and peaceful sound of their 2008 debut release. A coherent unit formed by guitar & poetry duo Jan and Romke Kleefst ra as well as Machinefabriek's Rutger Zuydervelt and Soccer Committee's Mariska Baars, the band delineate increasingly dark lyrical textures resonating with nocturnal atmospheres and tactile sound-operations on guitar, pedals and various looping devices. Building on patient and immersive improvisations and working with both sonorous drones and ghostly micronoises, "Wurdskrieme", which translates to "Cry of Words", moves at a dream-pace, substituting linear logic with a brushwood of metaphors and emotional abstractions. The underlying feeling of a subcutaneous tension is further accentuated by Jan Kleefstra's expressionist poetry delivered in the language of his native Friesland, a province in the far North of the Netherlands. Contrasting serene soundscapes like opener "Unkrud" with more tranquil moments featuring acoustic instrumentation ("Wurch"), the result spans up a sonic space that not only represents an evolution from their earlier work, but also takes them far beyond traditi onal categories and conventions.

Experimedia presents the fourth full length solo album by Kansas-based Aaron Martin. A former collaborator of artists as diverse as Machinefabriek and Dawn Smithson (Sunn O))), Martin originally devised 'Worried about the Fire' as the soundtrack to a short film and the record sees him deconstructing preexisting snippets, sketches and samples from various collaborations and solo performances. All prior restrictions were set aside as Martin forwent his regular live-approach, untypically using electronic processing and effects and editing the parts without limiting himself in any way. Still built around his set-up of cello, banjo, harmonica and organ, there is an unsettling installation-character to the work, with distant echoes of acoustic instruments shining through the ghostly fabric of these twelve short pieces. Mastered by 12k label-head Taylor Deupree, 'Worried about the Fire' has however not only turned out a dark and demure work, but also one of brittle beauty - ranging from the meditative cymbal-space of 'Ice melts' and the broken-Piano semblance of 'Blue Light' to the consoling Ambient-Folk of 'Making Rope'.

Water Tongue is to be featured on The Wire Tapper 23 CD included with all issues of The Wire (April Issue #314).

BIO
Aaron Martin began his musical life at age 11, switching between guitar and drums.  At the age of 17, he decided to change paths and learn how to play the cello, which he went on to study in college.  While earning his music degree, he began to experiment with recording.

After creating several self-released collections of music, and graduating college, he recorded Almond, which caught the attention of the Australian label Preservation, and became his debut release.  He has gone on to record two more albums for Preservation, River Water and Chautauqua, as well as collaborating with a variety of other musicians, including Machinefabriek, Part Timer, and Tan or Boil, with releases on Type, mobeer, and Under the Spire Recordings.

Aaron Martin lives and records in Topeka, Kansas.
