SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Fm synthesis "tips & advices"
« on: September 09, 2012, 09:46:09 am »
FM8 is definitely the place to start.  While it does have a lot more features than the OG FM synths (DX and TX series), the expanded interface is a boon to rookies - it's much easier to pick apart the presets (something NI provides in spades) and get on to your own experiments.

here's a contemporary tutorial featuring FM8:

and something from an earlier generation of explorers:

yeah, the sensate focus 12"s are remixes of an EP by mark fell and terre thaemlitz.  and this new album is further remixes of the sensate focus stuff.  mark fell has been on a hell of a roll the past couple of years.

it's all pretty great...the slow changes in form from release to release just mirroring how his tracks evolve.  just content to cook away in his kitchen.

sure is!  hey billy, have you been following the sensate focus EPs that this album is based on?

yeah but the reality is I dig this album much more...the SF sounds like a warmup for this.

nathan mclaughlin - the refrigerator is emotional

-beautiful work - I'm on the lookout for more of his stuff!

I haven't heard this one, but I really dig nathan's work and was lucky to throw a bunch of his tapes in my bag a few years back...

billy gomberg + offthesky "flyover sound" on experimedia. not new... but listening to a lot of it lately. and more impressed with every listen. this may be entering "classic" territory for me (in the best possible way).. absolutely LOVE this album.

comments like this are nice when an album comes out, but are much more meaningful years later.  I think some of the tracks on this would date to like 2007.

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: teenage engineering OP-1

if yr daunted by the budget, I recommend MFB

it's definitely more analog than the OP-1 and yr not getting the bells and whistles of looping and sequencing, but the small units are teeny tiny.

worryingly, i've noticed that max lingo is starting to creep into my everyday lexicon. people look at you strangely when you say things like bang as a verb.

oh I've been at this place for years.  I regret not buying a c74 headband or "loadbang" t-shirt back in like 2002.

the Roads book is huge and dense, and don't expect it to change yr music or yr life.  I must post this every year on this forum, but the strength of Max/PD is being able to do something exactly as you need to, be as bloated or as lean as you see fit.  at the end of the day, it is still programming and as such is bundled with frustration and roadblocks.

my suggestion is really to keep it lean (which can be hard when you can JUST PATCH EVERYTHING TOGETHER), work on basic fluencies and make building blocks.  obviously there are a few of us here that can help.  ask questions!

The go to tome is Computer Music Tutorial by Curtis Roads.  This should detail a lot of issues and avenues.

however I don't think I've ever encountered a MaxMSP book that is satisfactory or will lead you in the direction you actually want to go (which is something you may not know yet).  The best way to get dirty hands w/Max and PD is really to get in there and try to execute your ideas.

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: small portable mixing desk
« on: April 14, 2012, 06:33:13 am »
my recollection from mixer shopping is that once you get into 2 or more aux sends you get into much bigger mixers or you have to buy Behringer:

http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/UB1204-PRO.aspx

or this Yamaha:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MG124c

I have a 16channel Yamaha in the "home studio" that I gigged with a bit (this was before they slimmed the form factor).  It's a good mixer.  I can't comment on this specific model except that it does have the two aux sends you are looking for.
