Obsessed with the latest Mount Eerie release. Haunting songwriting, haunted production.

SELF PROMOTION / Witxes - Sorcery/Geography
« on: May 09, 2012, 04:49:29 am »
Dear 12k fellows, pleased to share my new piece of work :

Witxes - Sorcery/Geography

Humanist Records
Released May 8 2012
Digital : available now // 12" 180g LP (350g. sleeve) : pre-order now, shipping out end of may

Sorcery/Geography is a witchcrafted recreation of an inmost geography. This is the first long-length record by Witxes after several isolated tracks for various compilations (SEM label, Basses Fréquences, FutureSequence, etc.), as well as a 26-min piece for FeedbackLoop and a compilation of early works in 2010 (reviewed by Fluid Radio here). It was recorded between autumn 2010 and winter 2012 in various locations around France, then mastered by Lawrence English in Brisbane.

Check it here.

OTHER MUSIC / Re: Any electroacoustic, acousmatic composers?
« on: January 27, 2012, 03:42:23 pm »
Hi! First of all I want to wish good luck and a happy and creative new year to everybody.

Second, I wonder if some of you guys know about electroacoustic, acousmatic, etc. composers using Ableton Live and other softwares as a main tool for their work. Do you know any composers in the line of Ligeti, Riley, Penderecki, Reich, etc. using modern software tools? I have been researching on my own and haven't been very successful... Cheers!

Most of the older contemporary/acousmatic composers have assistants whose job is to deal with the electronics within the writing of the piece. Even young composers have such assistants. I currently work for the national center for musical creation in Lyon, FR and we welcome contemporary music composers, most of them are young, nevertheless, they work with special assistants to develop the electronic part of the score.

The Field - Today & Tomorrow
During my 30 minute commute up Woodward Ave to work this morning.

I should listen to this once again, it's been a long time... I love his two first albums but the latest one was a big disappointment. It lacks the textures and the grain of the previous releases and it kinda sounds like a guy with cold synths trying to cover The Field. I'm being hard, but I love him.

Now playing : Brian Blade Fellowship - Season of Changes
One of my favorite 2000s jazz record...

2011, grateful for :

Being invited to support Tim Hecker twice, but also Julianna Barwick, Colin Potter, Paul Bradley and Chelsea Wolfe.
Receiving labels offers to release my music (to be released in 2012).
Being asked to record tracks for very nice compilations.
Being offered to play an a/v performance in a creepy vault under a castle in the middle of nowhere.
Performing for kids lying down and watching them react to the sounds.
Meeting very nice artists and starting to collaborate.
Having wonderful friends lending me wonderful synths (and a place to go when I'm homeless).
Having very nice people supporting my work.
Touring with Trisha Brown Dance Company and assisting Alvin Curran.
Listening to "Everybody wants to rule the world" a thousand times in my car.

But the main thing I'm grateful for is all the great music YOU all delivered this year. This is my main fuel and inspiration.

OTHER MUSIC / Re: 2011 TOP 10 LISTS

10 :

1. Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972 (Kranky)
2. HTRK - Work (work, work) (Ghostly Intl)
3. The Psychic Paramount - II (No Quarter)
4. Textures - Dualism (Nuclear Blast)
5. Implodes - Black Earth (Kranly)
6. The Haxan Cloak - The Haxan Cloak (Aurora Borealis)
7. Illuha - Shizuku (12k)
8. Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2 : Judges (Constellation)
9. Lawrence English - The Peregrine (Experimedia)
10. Jacaszek - Glimmer (Ghostly Intl)

Honorable mentions : Simon Scott, Julianna Barwick, Stephan Mathieu, Thundercat, Andy Stott, Kangding Ray, Liturgy, Ohayo, Bonnie Prince Billy, Juv, Bon Iver, Charles Eric Charrier, Puzzle Muteson, Earth, Barn Owl...

Disappointed by The Field, Biosphere and Pj Harvey albums... Don't like the sound of the first two and got bored by the last one.

Live performances : Missed a lot of things this year and didn't go out much, but supporting Tim Hecker twice was a great opportunity to dive into his massive sounding performances. Low and Shannon Wright were the best live acts I saw. Also liked Julianna Barwick and Tindersticks.

Top Hit : Fleer Ultra by Thundercat
Top Hymn : Beth/Rest by Bon Iver

Also missed a lot of movies that seemed interesting but loved Meek's Cutoff by Kelly Reichardt.

Lately

Obsessed with the latest Bonnie Prince Billy Wolfroy Goes to Town (Drag City, 2011). I used to be a great admirer of the man, but kinda let it go around 2007, when he started releasing tons of live material and I got tired of all my folk/country/americana records. I gave this album a try and thought it was superb. Perfect "by the fireplace" record. The recording just suits the songs so well to me : beautiful tone, perfect source distance and a warm yet delicate presence. Also dug out my "Ask Forgiveness" EP, made out of covers (R Kelly, Sinatra, Bjork, etc.).

Also
Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol.2 (Raster-Noton, 2009) -> Loving it a lot more than then when it was released.
Lambchop - Nixon (2000) -> Classic.
Puzzle Muteson - En Garde (Bedroom Community, 2011) -> Interesting, intimate yet intense and touching folk release.
Simon Scott - Bunny (Miasmah, 2011) -> One of my fav' for 2011
John Adams - Shaker Loops -> Thanks to the feature film "Io Sono l'Amore" which uses excerpts of this a lot.
Thundercat - The Golden Age of Apocalypse (Brainfeeder, 2011) -> Very interesting anti hifi production, but not lo-fi, fresh&groovy.
Pasture - Composite -> I really dig the sound of this one, like a cassette dream.
François Couperin - various harpsichord pieces from late 17th/early 18th century.

And a lot of Actress and HTRK.

Barre Phillips - Mountainscapes (1976, ECM)

Amazing free jazz record, bass-led, fooling around with synthesizers and electronic layers. In 1976.
