ALTERNATIVE PRESS (US)
this compilation on taylor deupree's (prototype909/human mesh dance) 12k label takes the current trend of glitch-based song construction a step further. filtering digital glitches, sound file corruption and recorded media dropouts through minimal techno and electroacoustic compositional influences, the artists create soundtracks for subatomic netherworlds and love songs for geiger counters.

richard chartier's "untitled" almost opens the album - almost, because, without headphones, it's inaudible. microscopic clicks bounce from channel to channel, and bass, which is more deep-sea ear pressure than throb or pulse, softly fills your head. prodigy dan abrams' (a.k.a. shuttle358) and albert tan's untitled piece takes minimal techno to its lowest common denominator: glassy percussion taps out a repetitious beat, with accompaniment from hollow bass melodies and prismatic filtered drones. deupree's "a100study00.01.31" is an ambient slow groove for static washes and EKG monitor.

with far too much detail to be ambient, and not enough audible presence to be techno, the tracks on this disc (which really should've been packaged with a great pair of headphones) are totally engrossing. plug in the 'phones and lose yourself in a bedbug sized world of physics-defying alteration of sound. - jason olariu

GROOVES (US)
this is the second compilation CD from 12k, run by taylor deupree. some artist in this compilation, richard chartier, kim cascone, *0, take part in "lowercase" compilation, too. other artists are goem, miki yui, dan abrams, surge, komet, tetsu inoue, shuttle358, etc. this cd is an exhibition of post digi-costic music. it shows that such sound has established itself completely. the next step of this movement will produce something like new, or not... we couldn't judge it now. THE WIRE
(UK)
featuring barely-there electronic clickscapes from tetsu inoue, kim cascone, komet, richard chartier, goem and deupress among others, 12k is the latest missive from taylor deupree's new york based microsonic label. this rather good, if a bit wallflowerish, limited edition compilation is strictly for ascetic aesthetes who think that chain reaction is all ornamental frippery, raster-noton offers too much pleasures and mille plateaux is just too straightfaced.

XLR8R (US)
taylor deupree is quickly building 12k into one of north america's most respected, innovative experimental labels. all the elements are there - stunning design, covetably limited pressings, and a stellar roster of minimalist sound-smiths. an excellent encapsulation of the label's vision, 12k1008 ranges from the hushed glitchwork of richard chartier to *0's noto-like repetitions to the sublime ambiance of shuttle358. allied artists goem and komet (frank bretschneider) weigh in with the clickness while tetsu inoue (with deupree) and miki yui test the limits of listenability itself. - philip sherburne.
